Using A 4 N 1 Auto Emergency Tool

My truck was almost perfect in workmanship. It had all new door seals, new undercoating throughout and even an all new engine. When I installed the new engine I put a snorkel air cleaner on it so you could drive in deep water.
I sprayed Wd-40 on the plug wires so they wouldn’t drown out in deep water. As i was getting ready to go mudding with my buddies it dawned on me that I could take the emergency auto tool and place it in the glove box so I would have it for a flash light in case it got dark.
There were four of us going trucking through the mud so we were all getting our gear together. We each had a list of safety equipment to take so we didn’t take four of one item. On my list was a high lift jack and a chain.
After checking the list for everybody nobody had an auto emergency tool. I showed everybody mine just so they new I had it with me on the outing. I explained to them that with this tool I could use it as a flashlight or use it with the flashing red lights as a warning of trouble. It can also cut the seat belts if you can’t get your seat belt undone and you need out of the vehicle. Its got a pointed steel tip for breaking out the window glass if your car is flooding with water. With all these handy functions they said you better bring it. We got going on the trip which was about an hour away from home. Its been my experience that when breaking the glass before you should strike quickly and with force. Lightly tapping the glass usually won’t cause the glass to break. As far as the seat belt cutter, it works really well and can be used for cutter other stuff like your blue jeans if you got hurt and needed to get to the injured area really quickly. The flashing lights can be used for getting someones attention, or for signaling traffic when your broke down and your car is in the traffic lane. When I used the flashlight several times I realized that the list is long for times when you need a handy flashlight.
As we got there the park manager told us it had rained there about 3 inches the day before. We went on into the park and got to our starting point which was the advanced portion of the park in regards to hills and roughness. We got started going up some pretty good hills right away which we didn’t think was to bad a challenge.
As we got to the top of the second climb we noticed that there was no going back and it was a level bed of mud for about a mile from what we could see. So we kept on going only to find out that the mud got wetter until we got to mostly water.
I rolled up the windows so the truck wouldn’t get water inside it and kept plowing away until all at once it got to deep and I couldn’t go any more. My 35 inch tires were slinging water and mud everywhere but it seemed that we were sinking. Water started coming in the doors quickly so I was beginning to panic.
In fact it seemed like my feet were under water so I decided to get out but couldn’t because the door wouldn’t open. I was panicking since my seat belt wouldn’t open either. I got out the emergency auto tool and cut the seat belt then crawled out the window to safety. The rest of the guys decided not to try and go through the deep water and mud that I did.We finally made it back to the start of the park and were happy everybody was safe and all the trucks were still running.

Condo Flood Disaster (Part 1)

This is part 1 of 2 of one of the more serious cases of water intrusion that I have had to deal with in my career. The first part of the story covers a little bit of background leading up to the initial disaster. Part 2 will cover the remediation of the water damage in the condos to illustrate a firsthand account of handling water intrusion on a large commercial scale.

The background of the situation is rather simple… nine years ago (2003) Charleston, South Carolina experienced one of the largest real estate growths the city had ever seen. Being a destination city drew tourist to want to either move to Charleston or to have a vacation home located there. In the industry of multi-family building there were limited names to meet these ever growing needs. At the time demands were high and product was low. New companies that were leaders in the multi-family building industry entered in to the market for Charleston. With so many new projects, companies scrambled to gather as many employees, sub contractors, and materials as they could. When there is a massive push to expedite product and there is a lack of personal commitment to the final outcome there will always be oversight and room for error. That is exactly what took place as I entered into the picture with several condominium projects.

Moving ahead seven years, the room for error reared its ugly head. Over the course of seven years the condominiums that companies had been in a mad rush to complete were full of homeowners living enjoyable lives. My position with the company had been to cover the areas of quality control, homeowner liaison, and repairs from a remediation stand point. I started to notice that water intrusion was becoming consistent on several projects in areas that were associated with the exterior design and stucco application. Through due diligence and active involvement in a swift resolution, the builder determined that all stucco must be removed, sheathing repaired, window reinstallation, and a new water proofing application installed on four condo projects. During this process there was the ever growing battle of keeping homeowners happy, praying weather would cooperate, project funds from insurance claims to keep coming in, and that in the end the recladding of the stucco would address all of the concerns.

My main concern on each project was to ensure that my homeowners were informed, content, and kept on schedule. One project alone had one hundred and fifty condominiums. Whenever you remove any exterior portion of a building you are making it completely bare and susceptible to the elements of Mother Nature. I have always informed my homeowners that I work business hours, but in the case of an emergency I would rather be contacted at midnight than to have an absorbent amount of damage to address the following morning. Charleston is a typical beach town with regards to its weather, summer time rain storms come in fast and heavy. At roughly 9:30pm one night I received a phone call from a homeowner stating that when she walked into her bedroom, her carpet was completely saturated. In a panic mode she went to get her neighbors, only to discover that they had saturated carpet as well. Knowing that wet carpet has roughly a twenty- four hour time period before odor and mildew set in, I knew that with the recent rain storm that night I was going to have to move quickly.

As I drove up to the building that evening I had already placed a call into Service Masters to inform them that I would need water extracted that evening, as well as fans and dehumidifiers, and that the following morning carpet would need to be removed. Little did I know that I would not have just two condos affected, I had five. The location of these five condos was in an area on a courtyard where stucco had recently been removed. The buildings exposure allowed for water to pool up on the courtyard and simply flood the condos. The water damaged carpet, hardwoods, furniture, and sheetrock. It is amazing what damage water can do in a short period of time. Fortunately we were able to get everything taken care of in a speedy manner as I will elaborate on in part 2. In situations concerning water damage, quick action is a necessity. With water damage that is left unattended for 48 hours or more, the chance for mold problems to arise is astronomical. Even with a speedy clean up, I often recommend a mold inspection to ensure that all areas have been dried properly, and that no new problems have arisen.

I have been in the data recovery business for many years and have read and heard many “facts” covering the causes, costs and trends of data loss recovery. I have also heard of all the best ways to backup data ensuring total loss of data never happens. Where do these “facts” and best methods actually come from and how accurate are they? Where do they come from? Mainly vendors, be it hardware manufacturers, software authors or offsite backup companies who are trying to sell you their single solution, best ever product. How accurate are the facts? Probably reasonably accurate if you take the context of the fact in isolation, however, in reality when you look at the bigger picture who really knows.
Examples of “facts” easily obtained from the web are as follows: -
93% of companies that lost their data centre for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. 50% of businesses that found themselves without data management for this same time period filed for bankruptcy immediately.”
Of those companies participating in a Cost of Downtime Survey,
46 percent said each hour of downtime would cost their companies up to $50,000,
28 percent said each hour would cost between $51,000 and $250,000,
18 percent said each hour would cost between $251,000 and $1 million, 8 percent said it would cost their companies more than $1 million per hour.”
I wish my company was in a position lose a million dollars per hour if I lost my data! If I was I would have retired a long time ago “At what point does loss of data threaten the survival of a business? I don’t know, and I feel most business owners would not know either until data loss actually happened, but please bear with me, more “at what point does data loss threaten survival of my business facts” follow: -
40% of companies in the Cost of Downtime Survey said 72 hours,
21% said 48 hours,
15% said 24 hours,
8% said 8 hours,
9% said 4 hours,
3% said 1 hour,
4% said within the hour.”
The mentioned “facts” above discuss the consequences of data loss, the following “facts” look at the probable causes of data loss.

Nearly three out of five personal computer users have lost an electronic file they thought they had sufficiently stored.
One in four users frequently back up digital files, even when 85 percent of computer users say they are very concerned about losing important digital data.
82 percent keep a hard copy of important documents they’ve also saved electronically.
Thirty-seven percent of the survey’s respondents admitted to backing up their files less than once per month.
Nine percent admitted they have never backed up their files.
More than 22 percent said backing up information is on their to-do list, but they seldom do it.
Among home computer users who backup information:
68 percent save the things most important to them in multiple places, the hard drive as well as removable media such as floppy disks (79 percent) compact disks (CDs, 58 percent).
30 percent of companies report that they still do not have a disaster recovery program in place and two in three companies feel their data backup and disaster recovery plans have significant vulnerabilities.
Eighty-seven percent of the companies report they have a formal data backup and storage strategy in place and 79 percent of the companies consider tape crucial for their long-term storage and archiving. The survey also found that 85 percent of companies view tape as an essential technology for disaster recovery, and 83 percent cite that tape serves an important role in supporting more robust record retention requirements in today’s increased regulatory environment.
The survey finds that for 61 percent of respondents, a well-designed data backup and storage system uses both tape and disk, taking advantage of the benefits of each technology. Moreover, 89 percent view tape as an essential technology for disaster recovery, and 83 percent see tape as important for meeting regulatory requirements for data retention.
Surveys found that 36 percent of IT departments changed their backup and restore procedures and disaster recovery planning efforts post 9/11. The most common changes include: establishing regular testing procedures (56%) and moving data backup offsite (43%).
However, at least 30 percent of companies surveyed still operate without a formal disaster recovery plan.
Fifty-nine percent of companies polled test their data backup and storage systems at least once a quarter. Conducting a regular external audit of backup and restore systems is far from a common practice – only 32 percent report conducting an external audit.
Six percent of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year. Given the number of PCs used in US businesses in 1998, that translates to approximately 4.6 million data loss episodes.

All the above “facts” are subjective to individual users and companies, therefore we can assume they are all reasonable speculative. Everyone and every organisation will place a different value on their data and, hopefully, most will have a way of backing up and restoring data. These methods will vary based upon two major factors, cost of data protection and availability of resource to undertake the backup.
You may not like, or wish to admit to yourselves the following harsh and mercenary fact: -
You can replace absolutely everything within your company, desks, chairs, software, hardware and buildings. Even people can be replaced, but when your data is lost, it is lost. In short you will have no idea who your customers are, no idea of who you owe money to and who you will need to collect money from. Your company will be in serious if not terminal trouble.
I am sure, if you think about it, you will agree you have just read the only fact which should considered 100% correct.
What is the best way to protect your data ensuring it will always be available for restore? Do you backup to local tape and store in a fire proof safe? Do you backup to a secure offsite data centre at a remote location? Well, if you can afford it, and if you can afford it you will probably have a lot of data (initial cost of 8000 to backup 500GB with ongoing costs of 200 per month thereafter) the best solution is to employ both solutions, tape will guarantee fastest possible restore time and offsite backup to a secure remote location will ensure your data is always secure regardless of disaster.
If cost is a potential drawback then opt for offsite backup, no initial cost with low monthly payments is a sensible option, it might take you a couple of days to get your 500GB of data back, but at least you can do the most important thing, get your back and continue you business without serious financial impact.

Survival Food For Disaster Preparedness

Disaster refers to a state of extreme ruin or misfortune that causes great loss of life and property. It is essential that we prepare for such a situation prior to its happening so that when it does, you will have means of survival. There are quite a lot of important items that we should have in our survival kits to enable us to get through the effects of the disaster. Though you need all these things, the most important of them all is the survival food.

Disasters can be extreme in such a way that they will render any amount of cash useless. Unless you have your own prepackaged food, then you will find it rough to survive. Planning while you have time is the best thing you can do. This will create time to include varieties of food that the family needs and sometimes give you the time to include favorites that will go a long way into raising the spirit of the family members in case of a disaster.

You should pay attention to everyone’s dietary needs when packing your own survival kit. If you have elderly people or infants in the family, make sure you pack foods that are not only fit for their consumption but also energy giving and nutritious. E-Mini Training: A Common Trade That Often Ends in Disaster

If you have traded for any period of time, you start noticing where other e-mini traders are setting up to take trades. Sometimes I am very impressed with the positioning some traders utilize to enter trades; sometimes not so much. Of course, in my personal trading (and I am sure that most traders feel this way) I have specific trades that have been successful for me; on the other hand, I have several trades that many claim to be solid trades that I just cannot seem to execute properly.

But there is one particular trade that I see on a regular basis, and is usually executed by smaller e-mini traders, judging from the time and sales dialog box. This trade is often referred to as a bounce trade and often occurs along important or significant lines of support and resistance. I generally see this trade over the lunch hour and during periods of low volume trading.

The trade is a relatively simple one. Often times, when the price has moved through a significant support/resistance line, it is not uncommon to the price action retrace back to the recently pierced support/resistance line and then resume in its original direction. I cannot quote with any degree of accuracy the success/failure rate on this trade, though I have seen many small e-mini traders take substantial losses when trying to execute this trade.

The bounce trade can often require an e-mini trader to take an entry position in the opposite direction that the market is currently moving; and this entry is usually against this trend. Not an auspicious way to start a trade, to say the least. But lacking any major active e-mini traders (since the volume is generally low) the price oftentimes has a tendency to back up to the just pierced support/resistance line and then bounce 5 or 6 ticks back in the direction of the original price movement. For small traders, this 5 or 6 tick gain is just what the doctor ordered.

But there are a number of problems that should be considered with the trade, and careful consideration and care should be utilized before implementing this trade, because:

The bounce trade is often against the trend, which significantly lowers your chance for success.
The bounce trade is generally executed over lunchtime (when small traders are active and their trading has an disproportionately large effect on market price.) But trading during low volume periods can be, at best, a difficult proposition. Market orders that would normally have little effect on price can, because of the low volume, create more dramatic price movement than most traders would normally suspect.
This build up of small traders add at a print distinct price level creates a situation that can become a position of danger, especially if a bona fide floor trader who takes an interest in moving the market in the opposite direction of the expected bounce. What started as a simple 5 or 6 tick scalp can leave a small trader pressing the limits of his stop/loss position.

After watching this trade play out for nearly 25 years of my career, the results are by and large unsatisfactory. While this trade seems innocuous enough, the market moved by primarily small traders is especially susceptible to volatility in the opposite direction by larger traders who would like to take advantage of the smaller traders who are fully committed to their bounce straight. Any substantial volume in the opposite direction of the small traders can drive the price dramatically against these traders. As the smaller traders bailout of their positions, the price action moving in the opposite direction of the small traders original position is enhanced as they abandon their original bounce trade entry because the risk of getting stopped out becomes a very real possibility.

Oftentimes, it is very easy to spot on your trading DOM the small traders stacked up on a certain price that the traders hope the price action will retrace to and provide them with a nice gain of five or six ticks. While this trade can be successful under certain market conditions, it is my opinion that the risks of the bounce trade far outweigh the potential profit. I avoid the trade, and oftentimes watch with interest the plight of the small traders. Sometimes they come out okay; more often than not they have a very rough go of it.

In summary, we have discussed a trade that most traders see on a very regular basis. It’s called a bounce trade and usually entails trading off a known support/resistance line and hoping that the price action will stop on the alignment in question and reverse direction. That’s a mighty tall order for a consistently successful trade. I have to also reiterate that this trade often occurs during low volume periods of time like the lunch stand down period, or just a lull in the normal volume patterns during the trading day. Finally, I have commented that this trade can sometimes work quite well, but if the market moves against the traders in the bounce trade the results can be quick and disastrous. For that reason, I avoid recommending the bounce trade as a regular part of your trading arsenal.
