Food storage in America, specially where survival food is concerned, depends on the fact that you will need edible rations for an extended amount of time. Most Americans are known to prepare for 2-3 weeks. But if you're storing food in advance (i.e., in anticipation of an impending emergency or disaster) then you need to have a 3 month to 1 year outlook about your food stocks.

I recommend that you include more of freeze dried and dehydrated meals rather than grocery foods or even MRE's. That's because they are cheaper, can be stored for far longer than MRE's and often retain their original nutrition post hydration.

Mark out a cool, dry section of your basement for food storage and avoid storing emergency food in the garage or attic. Also check for rat or insect infestation periodically and double check for rancidity.

Another tip I can suggest for your emergency disaster preparedness list is to stock up on low-sodium foods (soup, crackers, etc.) and consider alternatives to wheat if you're allergic to certain kinds of grains. In a survival situation, you will need all the protein you can get, so put this on top of your crisis food list.

Have a look in your phone book or yellow pages as ours has a page at the front with list of what you should have put away, and are often available from the emergency services.

I keep a sterno stove with fresh cans of sterno (you could use a camping stove too) to warm such things as canned beans with wienies, beef stew, pasta in sauce, etc., keep canned sardines, crackers, canned fruits, dried drink mix etc and lots of water, more than you think you'll need. The electricity is usually out and it's hot or very cold.

Just go through your regular grocery store with having no power to prepare food in your mind and select what would keep well and warm up simply on the camp or sterno store.

If cold, there is a whole other issue to think of because you must stay warm.

If you have animals, keep some food for the animals in an airtight container for emergency situations.

Mann, it would be more canned goods like salmon and meats, that do not need a heat source to warm them up, if it came to that. In a bunker situation, you would need large amounts of water, so if your storing water for a disaster, you need to change and rinse the vessel out.on a regular basis, Also look at nuts in the shell, more like almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts, store those in an airtight container, dried fruits like apricot's and figs store in an airtight container.

One of the homes in Joplin, the people had a good basement set up, they had an electric generator, after the tornado, they started the generator for light, and other uses, as well as the batteries they had.

The door to this area was a heavy like a chub or safe door.
