I don't know of brands, but we always keep a store cupboard stocked with tinned goods and food storage, just in case. This is what we've learned:
- milk is yummy, but does not store.Buy some tins of condensed milk – with water this can be made up to milk, and it itself tastes delicious on tinned fruit – kind of like very sweet cream or runny ice-cream
- tins keep almost indefinitely.Think about your food groups – buy lots of tinned fruit and veg, and stock up on tinned proteins – hot-dogs, tuna, salmon, chilli.
- in an emergency, people seem to think they won't care what things taste like, they'll just be glad of food. This is true, but don't suffer without purpose – put salt, pepper, and a few tubs of dried herbs and spices in your food store.
- peanut butter is very high fat and energy – keep a few jars, they store for a long time and if needs be, a big tub of peanut butter will keep you alive for about a week
- water.Lots and lots of water.
- chocolate bars!Mars bars or Snickers are the best, as they have a huge calorific content – they'll give you energy for hours and hours and they store well
- dried goods like bags of rice keep for ages, and they're extremely cheap
- if you like bread, I've often found that half-baked baguettes which come in plastic wrap have expiry dates like half a year later
- popcorn doesn't fill you up much, but it's healthy, can be made with nothing more than a saucepan and some heat, and is really very comforting.Keep a bag of corn around – it's cheap and stores forever
- a lot of crackers and cereal have long expiry dates if they're unopened – check your local store for carbohydrates that last
